The Reference Catalogue
The curated A–Z of fifty-two thousand websites, indexed for the people who still like to know what they're clicking.
ListOfWebsites is a hand-verified directory of 52,840 live sites across 487 categories — from daily news and design tools to vintage synth manuals and open-source geology instruments. Every entry has been read, opened, and signed off by a human curator.

A note on the method
Why every listing passes a 27-point quality check before it ships.
The directory is not auto-generated, and it is not scraped. Since David Renwick founded the catalogue in Portland in 2009, every entry has been hand-verified by a member of the editorial team — currently fourteen curators, editors, and engineers, plus a network of more than sixty category specialists who keep their corners of the web in order.
Before a site can be added to the index it has to clear a 27-point quality check. That check is unglamorous on purpose: it asks whether the page still resolves, whether it loads in under three seconds on a cable connection, whether it serves over HTTPS, whether the content is original rather than scraped from elsewhere, whether the site has a real owner with verifiable contact details, and whether the page actually does what it says it does. Listings that fail any one of those points are sent back to the submitter with notes, or shelved.
The most recent full-directory audit ran for fourteen months and finished in the second quarter of 2024. Its findings were bracing: 11,200 entries were retired for being dead, parked, hijacked, or — most often — quietly replaced by a thin landing page that no longer deserved a slot. The directory you browse today is the result: 52,840 live, verified listings across 487 categories, audited on a rolling basis so a 2025 entry carries a 2025 audit date.
We do not promise submission guarantees, and we do not claim to index the entire web. What we do promise is that if a link is in this catalogue, a human has opened it, read it, and decided it belongs.
